When I open my eyes, I'm immediately blinded by the harsh electrical light overhead. Now I understand why the Carraways prefer natural lighting. The bulb casts an awful yellow tinge on what little my eyes have adjusted to allow me to see and the buzzing is driving me insane.

I try to sit up, but I'm strapped down to a bed with some restraint system that won't budge. Leather, I think.

"Calm down." The woman's voice in the room is familiar and acerbic. It takes me a moment to recognize it since it's not hoarse with terror and rage like it was the last time I heard it.

Sapphire.

She's a blurry shadow now, but I can see her moving closer and I can hear her heels on some sort of tile. "I know Stockholm Syndrome's a bitch, but those fangs must've done a number on you. That or you're just too stupid to realize you're being rescued."

"Where is Coraline?" I seethe, struggling against the leather strap that binds my arms and chest to the bed even though I know it's useless. I'm a weakling and I always have been. "If you hurt her—”

"You'll what?" she taunts. I hear the scraping of metal chair legs across the floor and she leans over the back. My vision has cleared enough to see her smirking face and I decide I'd rather be blind. "Gonna take another stake for your vampire girlfriend?"

"She's not my girlfriend, but my boyfriend is gonna kick your ass when he finds you."

Boyfriend.

Is that what he is? The term somehow seems presumptuous and inadequate at once.

Her smug expression falls. "You're lucky there's ten pints of vampire poison coursing through your veins, you little fuck." She slips a blade from the holster at her side, strapped over her jeans this time, and a flashback of her stabbing Coraline for the thousandth time picks the worst time to harass me. As if that night doesn't already haunt my dreams.

"Ash." Cian's voice is rough and scolding, filling the room as he enters. He looks at me, then at the knife and narrows his eyes. "Get the fuck out of here. I told you not to go anywhere near them."

Them? That bodes well for the possibility that Cora is still alive. What condition she's in is another matter entirely.

"I'm just talking to him," she says, slipping the knife back into its holster. She stands and skirts away from him. I've been around vampires long enough to recognize submissive posture. I guess humans do it, too.

"Now," he snarls.

Ash casts a withering glance in my direction before darting out of the room and slamming the door behind her. I squirm under my restraints as Cian approaches the bed and screw my eyes shut tight when he pulls a blade. So he just wanted to finish the job on his own.

Instead of the pain I'm bracing for, the restraint around my chest loosens, followed by the one around my legs. When I dare to open my eyes, Cian has already returned his knife to its holster and he sits down in the chair Ash left by the bed.
